A soldier and a civilian were killed in a communist ambush Saturday on a commuter bus on the eastern Philippine island of Catanduanes, a military official said.

A group of soldiers were on the bus to investigate reports of extortion by guerrillas of the communist New People’s Army (NPA) when they were ambushed, said local army commander Lieutenant Colonel Leoncio Cirunay.

Five soldiers and two civilians on the bus were also wounded, said the officer.

He added that the guerrillas apparently suffered many casualties as well, judging by the bloodstains on their route of retreat.

The 6,300-strong communist insurgency movement has been waging a guerrilla campaign to seize power since 1969 in one of the longest Maoist-led rebellions in Asia.
